清朝末年，朝野上下发生了银元单位之争，币制未统一。北洋机器局更名北洋造币局，铸行较早脱离“两单位”的银币后，又于光绪二十五年始，铸行面值库平纪重的“光绪元宝”，在这类币的背面左側阿拉伯数字表示该币为光绪X年版。北洋造34年光绪元宝库平七钱二分私铸币发行量少，市场稀缺，为稀有币种，近年来收藏钱币市场火热，所以此钱币具有极高的收藏和投资价值。
光绪元宝是清朝光绪年间流通的货币之一。由两广总督张之洞率先引进英国铸币机器铸造银元和铜元，之后各省纷纷仿效，共有十九个省局铸造。光绪年间铸造了一系列银币，但北洋造光绪元宝由于不便于流通使用，故铸额极其稀少，更显珍贵。

近期深圳弘博收藏馆有幸征集到北洋造光绪元宝库平七钱二分私铸币一枚，直径为3.84cm、约重为19g。钱币正面珠圈内为“光绪元宝”四字，四字中间铸有满文，
上缘铸制造局“北洋造”三字，下环币值“库平七钱二分”，左右各伴一圆点星。钱币背面中心为一幅栩栩如生的蟠龙图，眼神灵异，炯炯有神，龙鳞雕刻细密有致，腾云驾雾，身姿遒劲有力，尽展皇家威严大气，龙形飞舞，生动传神，左侧有阿拉伯数字“34”。此枚北洋造光绪元宝私铸币，背面的神龙是全鳞图，蕴含一定的历史意义，是至今遗存极罕的一枚。

试铸币的制作版式，绝对是和流通币在规格上是一样的，只是试铸币是一个标本，流通币是根据标本制作出来的钱币，总体保持一致。曾在网上有网友评论说，北洋造光绪元宝有铜质的，是清代的样币和试铸币，存世量极少，铜质的比银质要轻，经过多年的磨损不会超过20克，直径在3.7到3.9之间。既然是收藏，当然物以稀为贵。
