此副《赵孟頫临清明上河图长卷绢本》图中可以看到几个非常鲜明的艺术特色:此画用笔兼工带写，设色淡雅，不同一般的界画，即所谓"别成家数"。构图采用鸟瞰式全景法，真实而又集中概括地描绘了当时汴京东南城角这一典型的区域。作者用传统的手卷形式，采取"散点透视法"组织画面。画面长而不冗，繁而不乱，严密紧凑，如一气呵成。画中所摄取的景物，大至寂静的原野，浩瀚的河流，高耸的城郭;小到舟车里的人物，摊贩上的陈设货物，市招上的文字，丝毫不失。画面中，穿插着各种情节，组织得有错落有致，同时又具有情趣。经过上百年的自然氧化，多次装裱，绢表面形成了一层自然柔和的‘宝浆亮’光泽。并非只是简单的描绘百姓风俗和日常生活，在商业繁荣的表面之下暗藏玄机，明线下交织着一条令人心悸的暗线，同时又是一幅带有忧患意识的"盛世危图"。通过表现惊马闯郊市为伏笔，铺垫出全卷矛盾的视觉中心，船与桥的险情和桥上文武官员争道交织成的矛盾高潮，还有前后出现的军力懈怠、消防缺失、城防涣散、国门洞开、商贸侵街、商贾囤粮、酒患成灾等场景。张择端以画曲谏，提出对城防、安全、交通等诸多社会问题的忧虑。
